How you make a difference

The Recreation Specialist is responsible for providing therapeutic recreation activities to all residents of the program. They work closely with a multi-disciplinary treatment team and provide input on residents' participation in recreational activities. This role requires a strong understanding of therapeutic recreation and the ability to work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to ensure the best possible outcomes for residents.



Key Responsibilities

  • The Recreation Specialist provides direction to Therapeutic Security Technicians in implementing living unit activities, ensuring compliance with all applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
  • They complete interviews/assessments on all assigned residents to determine their recreational capabilities and resources and develop and maintain scheduled recreation programming to reflect their progress towards specific goals and objectives. 
  • As a member of the assigned treatment team, the Recreation Specialist integrates leisure activities and recreational services as part of the total resident treatment plan, providing input on resident participation in therapeutic recreation activities at resident staffing and case conferences.
  • They coordinate scheduling and manage referrals of residents to assigned therapeutic recreation groups and activities, attend and participate in administrative meetings, department or facility sponsored training, case conferences, and presentations, and engage in staff development activities.
  • The Recreation Specialist maintains documentation that reflects services provided and resident progress toward specific goals and objectives, using established formats, within established time frames, and attends weekly individual supervision with Team Leader to enhance understanding of client population and improve quality of recreation therapy services provided.



Qualifications & Requirements

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor's degree in recreational therapy, recreation administration, or a related field highly desirable

Experience

  •  Demonstrated experience as a recreational provider required.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of recreational and therapeutic activity programs. 

Licenses/Certifications

  • None required.
